No, you do not need a box spring. Our bed features an integrated slat system for direct mattress support.

Compatibility Note: The gap between the support slats is 2.9 inches. This tight spacing ensures maximum support, especially for memory foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses, which typically require a slat gap of 3 inches or less to maintain their shape and warranty.

The Joey Bed uses a thoughtful mix of solid walnut and high-quality walnut veneer. All visually prominent components—the legs, headboard, side rails, and front drawer panels—are crafted from solid Appalachian black walnut. The inner drawer boxes and underside of the bed utilize a walnut veneer over a strong birch core for structural integrity and stability. The bed slats are made of solid rubberwood. This construction ensures lasting quality where it matters most, while minimizing wood movement and maximizing durability.

The slat spacing on this bed is 2.8".

The Joey storage bed comes with an integrated headboard and is not available without it.

Our Storage Beds have a maximum safe static weight capacity of 950 lbs (approximately 430 kg).

This total limit includes the weight of the mattress, bedding, and occupants. The frame is built with heavy-duty side rails, a reinforced center support beam, and closely spaced slats (2.8 inches) to confidently handle the weight of modern, high-density mattresses (like memory foam and latex).

Caring for the wood focuses on gentle cleaning and protection from the environment:

1. Cleaning: For quick dust removal, use a microfiber cloth slightly dampened with warm water and wipe with the wood grain. Follow immediately with a dry cloth. Avoid harsh cleaning chemicals.
2. Protection: Keep the bed away from direct sunlight, heating units, or vents to prevent the wood from drying, cracking, or fading.
3. Finish Care (If Needed): If the wood appears dull or dry, you can lightly buff the surface with a small dab of olive oil on a paper towel to restore its luster.

A small gap around the mattress is normal and intended for proper function.

Frame dimensions are slightly larger than standard mattress sizes (e.g., a Queen frame is a little wider and longer than a Queen mattress). This gap, around 1 inch on all sides, serves two main purposes:

1. Ease of Making the Bed: The slight gap allows you to easily tuck in sheets and blankets, preventing your duvet or bed skirt from pooling, bunching, or overflowing too heavily over the side rails. This gives the bed a neat, tailored look
2. Allowance for Variability: It accounts for small variations in mattress manufacturing (which are not always perfectly sized) and allows the mattress material to expand or contract slightly without pressing against the wood and causing friction or damage.
